On March 27-29, the Weber State University Rodeo Team rolled into Heber, Utah to compete in the final two rodeos of the regular season. Three rough-riding days later, the champions were crowned.
With explosive performances in Heber, the Wildcats were able to walk away with seven of the 12 champion saddles and two team plaques. Overall, the women's team easily captured first place, while the men's team came in solid second.
Leading the way was men's team captain Cody Wade with three champion titles. Wade won the team roping saddle with teammate Brady Woodward. He also captured the steer wrestling title with a blazing 3.6-second run in the championship short go, propelling him past Baylor Roche and into the lead. Those two titles, plus an outstanding tie-down performance all spring, helped Wade lock-up the men's all-around title.
Not to be outdone by the timed-events, WSU's Caleb Bennett out-spurred the opposition in the bareback riding competition. Bennett's excellent performances in Heber helped him capture first-place honors.
The Wildcat women held their ground throughout the entire competition, as they had done all season. Sharlie Wade took the goat tying championship, an event the Weber women have dominated the entire season. Teammate Mackenzie Pratt took home the breakaway title after one of the strongest performances this spring.
With the season ending, not only were the champions recognized, but all national qualifiers were determined. Representing the women will be Sharlie Wade in the goat-tying and barrel racing events, Mackenzie Pratt in the breakaway roping and goat-tying events, as well as Kendra Hoffman and Hilary Walker in goat-tying.
WSU's competing men's team consists of Wade in steer wrestling and team roping, Woodward in the team roping, Bennett in the bareback riding and Payden McIntyre, Kyle Dahl and Payton Bullock in steer wrestling.
