The men's and women's rodeo teams from Weber State University have consistently been some of the best in the Rocky Mountain Region, with the women winning championships the past six years.

The teams looked to defend their recent successes last weekend at the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden. Going into the event, the Weber State Wildcat women were again sitting first in the Rocky Mountain region, the men in second. The teams both finished first in the event to maintain their top standings.

The men's team was led by captain Cody Wade, who led the men's all around with 365 points earned more than the three events he participated in. Wade placed second in the tie-down roping event, scoring 31.2 points. He then took fourth in steer wrestling with a score of 9.5. Finally he placed first as the heeler in the team roping event with his score of 26.

"I was a little bit sloppy maybe," Wade said. "I felt pretty good about it though. We [the men's team] lost three guys over the winter, but right now we're second out of 10 teams in the region. So we're looking good."

Wade was followed by teammate Brady Woodward in the men's all around with his score of 325, scoring more than 100 points over the third place finisher. Woodward won the tie down roping event with his score of 31.2.

The men's team also had a strong performance from Caleb Russell Bennett when he won the bareback bronco-riding event with his score of 149.

Payden McIntyre made his return to rodeo after having two bones broken in his leg when a bronco slammed him into the gate earlier this season. The WSU freshman ended up taking first place in the steer-wrestling event on Saturday night.

The Women were not to be outdone, placing four competitors in the top five of the all-around standings. Led by team captain Hilary May Walker, who scored 250 over her four events. She took second in the breakaway roping event with her time of 7.6 seconds, and tied for first in the goat-tying event with teammate Kendra Lee Hoffman with their time of 15.6 seconds.
