The Utah State University Aggies come to town to rekindle a rivalry that puts fire on ice.
"We're out to get them," said WSU defenseman Devon Benike, "and they're out to get us. Every game's a hard game."
The Wildcats are just two games into their season. They lost their first game to USU in Logan 3-2 in a heartbreaker. The Aggies scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to break the tie.
The game had plenty of rough stuff. WSU's Anton Volkov was suspended after the game due to an allegation that he attempted to kick an oposing player with his skate during a scuffle. Volkov said he was simply trying to shake lose from an Aggie player who was holding onto his leg. The suspention was appealed.
The nailbiter in Logan wasn't the first between these teams. The recent game only adds more fuel to the fiery rivalry.
Is there a bigger rivalry at Weber State?
"To tell you the truth, no," said WSU senior Michael Spawton. "When you hear football games, they say rival, but you don't really feel it. But when we play Utah State, that's always the biggest game of the year for us."
The Wildcats have now made some adjustments to make sure they come out on top this time.
Spawton said USU's win over the Wildcats to start the season was a fluke. Fans can see if it was or not Friday night at the Weber County Ice Sheet. The puck drops at 8:15 p.m.
