Every guy has either heard or said the words “she’s out of my league,” but the film of the same name just might be able to disprove that … at least in Hollywood.
League tells the story of Kirk (Jay Baruchel), the average Joe working the average job and living the average life, until the above-average Molly (Alice Eve) comes into it and defies modern dating rules by asking him out.
The constant badgering from Kirk’s close-knit group of friends and Molly’s snarky business partner that she is completely out of his league causes strain on the relationship, but ultimately the film asks if a 10 can really fall for a five.
Many recent romantic comedies have taken the initiative to be more realistic in their situations, and League is no exception. Whether Kirk is awkwardly introducing Molly to his dysfunctional family or taking care of his body grooming “prep work,” you truly believe, as Kirk does, that he’s in over his head. The major antagonist also isn’t Molly’s attractive jet-pilot ex, but Kirk himself, when his neuroses get the better of him.
If the film does have a fault, it’s that there are too many characters introduced and given minimal screen time.
Kirk’s live-in ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend have a very small amount of screen time, as does Molly’s younger sister. While not paramount to the story, their introduction and having them pop in and out every so often is more distracting than funny.
As with any R-rated film, you have to expect a reasonable amount of crude humor, which League also has in spades. You can expect to laugh through it, though, especially if you’re a guy who’s ever considered himself a five.
The perfect romantic comedy to see with friends or a date, She’s Out of My League will be enjoyed from everyone on the spectrum, regardless of your rank.
